Parent adviser sought as Fairbanks weighs adding LGBTQ curriculum

In preparation to launch a curriculum overhaul that would expose Fairbanks students to radical sexual ideologies in English and social studies, the Fairbanks North Star Borough is seeking to add a parent member to its Curriculum Advisory Committee.

The committee is revising the 7-12 grade English/Language Arts and K-12 grade social studies curriculum. The initial draft is finished, but work continues on the plan.

According to the school district’s website, the new curriculum would include “LGBTQ+ Literature” for 11-12th grade students. The elective class would fulfill part of the English requirement for graduation. Proposed readings include highly controversial novels and poems that have been criticized for sexual explicitness, explicit language, sexual violence and scenes of homosexual sex.

A second one-semester class for 10-11th grade students would fulfill a social studies requirement. This course includes an option that familiarizes students with the LGBTQ political movement and frames the LGBTQ agenda in terms of the historic civil rights struggles of African Americans and women.

In considering these changes the school district website states, “It’s important to the School Board that parents and community members are actively involved in this review of what is taught in our community’s classrooms.”

To serve on the advisory committee a parent must have a child enrolled in the school district.

Further revisions are expected before the proposed curriculum changes go before the Fairbanks School Board for a vote in the spring of 2020. Feedback from the public is being accepted throughout the process, and drafts of each revision will be posted on the school district’s website. They can be viewed here.
