Fairbanks school board meeting tonight – last one spent 2 hours on LGBT curriculum

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District will meet again tonight, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.

During the last meeting, Jan. 21, the board listened to nearly two hours of public testimony regarding the school district’s plan to introduce LGBTQ curriculum into high school English and social studies classes.

Public comment on the proposal consisted on seven testimonies against adding curriculum that promotes LGBTQ sexuality to teens, and 18 comments supporting new additions. Of the 18 in support of LGBTQ classes, three were actual curriculum writers crafting the materials. Two other supporters were members of the school district’s diversity committee, which promotes the LGBTQ political and social agenda in the schools.

As with the previous meeting, the curriculum controversy is not on the school board’s agenda for tonight, but attendees can address this issue during the time set aside for comment on non-agenda items. The meeting will be in the School District Administration Center (520 5th Ave., Fairbanks).
