Just the facts: COVID health impact in Alaska has dramatically fallen

The past month has seen a steep decline in the use of medical resources and overall active cases of COVID-19 in Alaska. On May 12 the state reported no new cases of the virus, no new hospitalization and no additional deaths.

Over the past 30 days, Alaska has reported just 65 new cases of the virus, while testing nearly 22,000 Alaskans during that same time span.

With an overall population of 731,500 residents, Alaska has had 387 total coronavirus cases with 339 (or 88%) now recovered. There are only 38 active COVID-19 cases with 12 current hospitalizations. One coronavirus death has been reported since April 11.

In terms of medical preparedness, the state enjoys the following resources. These numbers reflect uses for all types of medical issues – COVID-19 related and others.

    • Inpatient beds: 923 still available, 928 in use
    • ICU beds: 95 still available, 100 in use
    • Ventilators: 321 still available, 25 in use

Alaska is currently in phase two of five in terms of fully reopening its economy and social activity.

Phase two, which began May 8, includes the following restrictions, among others (view complete mandates here).

    • Restaurants, retail outlets and swimming pools: 50% capacity
    • Religious, social and other gatherings: 50-person maximum regardless of building capacity
    • Fitness and recreational facilities: 25% capacity
    • Bars, theaters, bowling, bingo, libraries and museums: 25% capacity
