Southeast university imposes mask mandates, wants violators reported

The University of Alaska Southeast, which has campuses in Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan will impose mask mandates for all students, staff and visitors as it provides both online and in-person classes this fall.

According to the university’s newly released orders, masks are required for anyone in a shared enclosed space such as a classroom or lab or any time a person can’t consistently maintain six feet separation from others. The university will provide cloth face coverings for students and employees, disposable face coverings, and “humanity shields” by request.

Instructors may only remove their face covering when teaching in a classroom equipped with a classroom shield.

COVID restrictions also apply to on-campus housing, which will be limited this year.

Visitors and guests will simply be “required to leave the campus if they fail to conform to these requirements.”

The university website asks members of the campus community to help enforce the COVID-19 mandates by “holding themselves and each other accountable.” This includes reminding people about the mandates and “encouraging compliance in a courteous and considerate manner.”

Those who persist in going about maskless should be reported, the university states. They will first be “provided resources and education with an emphasis on safety. Failure to comply after an initial conversation may result in disciplinary action or campus restrictions as appropriate.”

Student violators will be referred to the Dean’s Office. Faculty and staff will be answerable to their supervisors. Outside contractor violations will be reported to their employers, and visitors and guests will simply be “required to leave the campus if they fail to conform to these requirements.”

In addition to the mask mandates, most in-person mass gatherings on campus are prohibited. Those allowed “by special permission” will have additional safety measures required.
